Blog Yak and Yeti

Namaste,

I am writing from 14,400 feet up in a village called Dinboche.  The fact that I can get online up here is pretty incredible given the altitude, condition of the homes and remote location.  The speed is too slow to upload a photo (I uploaded one upon returninglee and horse home).

I am continuing to learn a lot about the Sherpa culture and way of life.  It is a difficult existence by any measure.  But they seem content and at peace most of the time.  The simplicity and Buddist teachings certainly contribute.

I am having an incedible experience, walking in the Himalayas during the day and sleeping in a tent next to Yaks (literally) at night.  The Yaks are massive beasts that look like a cross between a buffalo and a creature out of Star Wars.  They carry tents, oxygen tanks and other equiptment strapped over their back.  Much of the stuff we are bringing is for the two climbers on my expedition, Rob and Chaz, who will attempt to reach the Summit of Mt. Everest.  Just as we need to acclimatize going up, the Yaks cannot survive below 10,000 feet.  That is also true of the legendary Yeti, the Big Foot of the Himalayas. Some Sherpa carry a small pine branch in their jacket, so if they should come across the Yeti it will be fooled into thinking it came too low and will go back up. Not a bad idea.

My body is holding up pretty well, a few aches and sore throat but no big deal.

onward and upward,

Lee
