Blog Sherpas

Since the tragedy that left 13 Sherpas dead and 3 missing after an avalanche in the Khumbu ice fall on April 18th,  Sherpas have been in the news more than anytime since Tenzing Norgay reached the Summit with Sir Edmund Hillary on May 29, 1953. Many pieces portray the Sherpas merely as mountain porters or guides.  I was first introduced to the Sherpa community more than a dozen years ago. Suffice it to say, they are so much more than mountain support for Westerners to accomplish a goal.

The Sherpa are a community of people who migrated from Tibet hundreds of years ago.  While some Sherpas are mountaineers, many are not.  The Sherpas have branched out into different professions and can be found in different parts of the world, including nearly 2,000 Sherpas living right here in Jackson Heights Queens, NYC. I have learned a lot about myself from the Sherpas whom I have gotten to know, especially my dear friend Karma Sherpa.  Their spirit, strength and humanity are infectious.

Posted above is an interview from when I returned from Mt Everest two years ago.

I also invite you to listen to my very first interview for the Sherpa Path with Tenzing’s son @NorbuTenzingNorgay at: http://thesherpapath.com/norbu-tenzing-norgay-on-the-sherpa-path/

And if you want to go a little deeper (or climb higher), I encourage you to watch this film: http://thesherpapath.com/film/
